West Bend, WI – Today is a weird feeling at Witte’s Vegetable Market. About 10 weeks ago the sprint portion of our growing season started.
Things like sweet corn, melons, beans, tomatoes, and pickles all started being ready for harvest.
Waking up at 5 a.m. to get picking by 6 a.m. and working to 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. was my daily routine. However, surveying the fields this morning let me know it’s ok to slow down.

The pickles are long gone, the last corn was picked 10 days ago, and the final melon was bought over the weekend.
Things like zucchini and cucumbers have been taken over by powdery and will meet their end this coming weekend.
The race isn’t over, but the finish line is in sight.
