December 31, 2021 – West Bend, WI – It was April 2020 when the Schemenauer crew gathered for a very special window-birthday celebration that would have never been expected a century ago. The family of Alice surprised her with a song and gifts with the help of Cedar Community.
“Alice has a love of family, a strong faith and a great sense of humor,” said daughter-in-law Barbara Schemenauer.
Dressed in a purple sash, red wrist corsage and birthday crown Alice was wheeled to a window at Cedar Bay East to see her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Alice was one of seven children. She and her brother, 96, are the only ones left.
Alice got married at St. Anne Cathedral in Milwaukee. She was a member of St. Frances Cabrini in West Bend.
Alice was treated to cupcakes and balloons and $100 in scratch-off lottery tickets.
Alice Mary Schemenauer (nee Garvens) of West Bend entered into eternal life on Friday, December 24, 2021 at the age of 101. Beloved wife of Raymond J. Schemenauer for 57 years until his passing in 2002.
Devoted and loving mother of Thomas (Peggy), Janet (Michael) Zimmermann, Allen and Kent (Barbara). She is survived by her sister Lucille Swain; seven grandchildren: Michelle Zimmermann Schwei, Zachary Zimmermann, Andrea Schemenauer Burch, Derek Schemenauer, Jonathan Schemenauer, Crystal Schemenauer Theiler, Daniel Schemenauer; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary (nee Baumer) Garvens; brothers Eugene, Frederick, Leonard, Donald and sister Maletta Dechant.
Alice Mary was born in Milwaukee, attended St. Anne’s School and Holy Angels Academy. She retired from Briggs and Stratton. She sang in the choir for funerals, crocheted hundreds of items for shelters and amassed thousands of volunteer hours at hospitals in Milwaukee, West Bend and Miami, Florida.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, January 6 at Holy Trinity Church (521 Congress St. Newburg, WI) with Rev. Don Zurkel and Deacon Mike Koebel presiding. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until time of Mass. Interment will be private at Cedar Creek Cemetery with a Celebration of Alice Mary’s life at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff and hospice caregivers at the Cedar Bay East assisted living facility in West Bend.
