WIS 175 resurfacing project in Richfield to get underway Monday. Long-term road closure scheduled next week

March 1, 2017 – Richfield, WI – On Monday, March 6, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is scheduled to begin work on nine miles of WIS 175 (two segments) from Maple Road to Beechwood Industrial Court and from Polk Street to WIS 60, in Washington County. Improvements on the project include:

  • Resurface the existing roadway
  • Reconstruct and safety improvements at major intersections
  • Construct a new roundabout at the WIS 175 and Lannon Road (County Y) Intersection

The above improvements will include new concrete curb and gutter, storm sewer, asphaltic pavement, along with new signing and pavement marking.

Michels Highway, a division of Michels Corporation, plans on completing the $8.7 million project in late fall 2017. The schedule of work is weather dependent and subject to change. Operations will be split into two stages, requiring long-term and short-term closures that are summarized below.

Stage 1: (Beginning in March)

  • Full closure of WIS 175 from Maple Road to Beechwood Industrial Court (March 6 to late fall)
  • Full closure of WIS 175 from Polk Street to WIS 60 (mid-March to late fall)
  • WIS 175 will temporarily reopen to accommodate traffic for the U.S. Open (June 10 to June 20)

The WIS 175 detour will utilize I-41 by way of Lannon Road (County Y) at the south end, and by way of WIS 60 on the north end of the project.

Stage 2: (Beginning in late summer)

  • Full closure (15 consecutive days) of WIS 175 and County Y (Lannon Road) Intersection

Business and resident access will be maintained for the majority of the project. There will be short-term driveway closures related to operations.

WIS 175, within the project limits, was built in the 1920s with its last rehabilitation in 1989 or 1991, depending on which section of roadway. With the intersection at Lannon Road having a higher than statewide crash rate and higher injury rate at 37 percent of all crashes, a roundabout is anticipated to improve safety.
