August 31, 2022 – Washington Co., Wi – The United Way of Washington County is presenting its Cliff and Betty Nelson Volunteer Leadership Award tonight.
United Way’s Volunteer Leadership Award was created to recognize an individual in Washington County who has demonstrated community leadership and a long-term commitment to volunteering.

The award is named in honor of the late Cliff Nelson and his wife Betty, who are known for their outstanding volunteer efforts on behalf of human service, civic, and arts organizations. Each year, past Nelson Award winners nominate and select a new recipient.
There were three recipients honored this year with this prestigious lifetime achievement award. The last event was held in 2019 when Peter Ziegler was honored.
The awards tonight were presented by previous Leadership Award winners.
Tom Hostad, a Leadership Award winner in 2017, presented the first award.
- Our first recipient of this prestigious United Way award has been a generous contributor of his time, talent and treasures for more than 30 years in both Hartford and throughout Washington County.
- His service in key leadership positions include:
- President of the Hartford Rotary Club
- United Way of Washington County Campaign Chair in 2001
- Jack Russell Memorial Library Capital Campaign Chair (with his wife Shari) in 2009.
- He has served on numerous boards for non-profit organizations throughout the County and as President of Forte Bank (formerly First National Bank of Hartford) he has championed economic development and downtown revitalization projects in the Hartford area.
- Forte Bank has been a longtime United Way supporter under his leadership and one of the top local contributing banks.
- It is my honor to announce our first recipient of the night of the United Way’s Clifford A. & Elizabeth M. Nelson Volunteer Leadership Award…Tim Purman.
Charlie Hillman presented the next award. Hillman and his wife Gaytha received the Leadership Award in 2007.
- Our next recipient of this prestigious United Way award is mid-career and has already accomplished enough in a short amount time to be a recipient of this award.
- His experience includes:
- President of the West Bend Noon Rotary and received the Paul Harris award from his club.
- President of the West Bend Community Foundation.
- Chair for the West Bend’s Enchantment in the Park.
- Board member for the Economic Development of Washington County.
- Active in fund-raising for the Kettle Moraine YMCA.
- He is a former Creative Council member of the Young Professional of Milwaukee and Former member of the Governor’s Tax Blueprint Team.
- And lastly, a Leadership group graduate of the West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce leadership program.
- It is my honor to announce our 2nd recipient of the United Way’s Clifford A. & Elizabeth M. Nelson Volunteer Leadership Award…Chris Chlupp.
Kevin Steiner, a Leadership Award recipient in 2011, presented the final award.
- Our final recipient of this prestigious United Way award has over 45 years of community service accomplishments.
- His dedication to our local United Way is absolutely amazing.
- Year after year he joins the campaign chairs, campaign cabinet and the United Way staff and board to help us meet our goal and works to the very end, making extra calls and visits.
- In addition to his United Way accomplishments, he has served on:
- The Noon Rotary Club of West Bend
- Kettle Moraine YMCA fund raising committee
- Board member of the Washington County American Heart Association
- Active with American Red Cross
- And Active with Boys Ranch nonprofit
- It is my honor to announce our final recipient of the night of the United Way’s Clifford A. & Elizabeth M. Nelson Volunteer Leadership Award…Jerry Aman.
