October 28, 2021 – Jackson, WI – A tough night for volleyball teams across Washington County in the WIAA sectional semifinals. Hartford, Germantown and KML all packed their bags at the end of the night falling to the competition.
In their biggest and toughest challenge of the season, the girls of No. 3 Kettle Moraine Lutheran played with fire and tenacity, keeping each set with No. 1 Pewaukee close.
The Chargers would take control early in both the first and third sets, but were unable to sustain massive scoring runs to put distance between themselves and the Pirates.
Several bounces of the ball also just felt plain unlucky for the Chargers, as it was hard to keep track of how many plays ended with the ball just out of reach of a KML player, resulting in a point for Pewaukee.
Those twists of fate played a huge role in the first set won by the Pirates 25-21. Pewaukee dominated the momentum of the second set, gaining the advantage early and never letting go, winning 25-19. The third and final set was much more contested, with both teams trading serves and the lead back and forth.
However, a briefly uncontested run allowed Pewaukee to pull away and despite a spirited comeback effort from the Chargers, when down 5 points late into the third set, the rally ultimately fell short as Pewaukee won the third set 25-22.
KML head coach Stephanie Prochnow was very emotional following the loss, wearing a composed demeanor that still had an aura of sadness. Prochnow pointed to Pewaukee forcing the Chargers to make unforced errors late in the sets as a primary culprit for the result.
Prochnow did have a tremendous amount of pride for her senior players. “We have seven seniors and each of them was responsible for a piece of success the team had this season,” she said. “Having three seniors as captains this year and the contributions all seven have made on and off the court leaves us very proud.”
Prochnow said volleyball is a year-round commitment and just because this season is now over does not mean they are going to stop practicing to be back in the conversation of state championship contention next year.
