September 10, 2019 – Washington Co., WI – The Washington County Trail Sharks Mountain Bike Team is in full swing, led by head coach Rob WIllmas and assistant coaches Gary Durian, and Darrell Strickland.
We have been practicing since July and are now moving into our competing season. The team is the largest we have had since the Wisconsin Series started seven years ago.
The team consists of 40 athletes from West Bend, Hartford, Kewaskum, Slinger, and Kiel. Even though we have lost key athletes Hunter Schmitt, Nick Niemi, and Sam Carlson due to graduation, we are working hard to shape our younger athletes.
This year our numbers were up so we have now formed a West Bend East and West Bend West team along with the Washington County Composite team.
This weekend we raced up in Eau Claire; the furthest the team travels to race. The weather was perfect for all riders, no sun and misty.
We came home with three medals, which was Anja Lanser (1st) in her one-lap race, Kendra Schmitt (2nd) in her two-lap race, and Mike Spangenberg (4th) in his two-lap race.
Each lap is about 6 miles and the races average about 45-110 athletes. This was a great course for the new riders and we had eight of our racers doing their first NICA race. We look forward to a great season.
