January 18, 2021 – West Bend, WI – Second-generation business owner, Steven Walter, of Walter’s Carpet Gallery has died. He passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021 at the age of 71.
The company was founded by Leo “Bud” Walter in 1949. At the start the business was called Bud Walter Furniture and Floor Covering. It later changed to Walter’s Carpet Gallery.
Steven was born in Milwaukee on May 8, 1949 to Leonard V. “Bud” and Alice A. (nee Stehlic) Walter.
“Stevie and Stewie,” said Nancy Mehring. “I used to babysit for them when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I gave Stevie horseback rides.”
Mehring’s parents lived around the block from the Walter’s family. “A very nice family,” said Mehring. “Really nice boys.”
Steven eventually graduated from UW Madison and later was the owner/president of Walter’s Carpet Gallery.
Steven is survived by his mother Alice, son Benjamin “Ben” (Heather Mae) Walter, grandson Wyatt Leonard Walter and granddaughter Ruby Mae Walter, brother Stuart Walter and sister Tracy Walter.
There will be no formal funeral services.
