November 25, 2019 – West Bend, WI – There was a very large turnout Friday night in Barton as friends and family gathered to pay their respects to Nick Habersetzer. The Korean War Veteran died Thursday, Nov. 14 at the V.A. Hospital in Milwaukee.
Habersetzer, 83, was known for his volunteer spirit and his commitment to his faith. He was a recognizable face at veterans events and St. Mary’s Parish in Barton.
The Friday evening service included a resolution by the Knights of Columbus and representation from the local VFW and American Legion. Following Mass there were full military honors including the firing of a three-round volley, a lone bugler playing Taps, and a flag presentation.
As the church bell struck 7 o’clock the tri-cornered flag with blue field of stars was presented to Nick’s son Jeffrey.  “On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States Army and a grateful nation this flag is presented to you in honor of your father’s faithful and honorable service to our country.”

It was my privilege to serve with Nick on the West Bend Veterans Honor Guard for the past six years. He was larger than life. We will dearly miss him.
