September 1, 2020 – Town of West Bend, WI – A bit of a panic at Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center, 5595 County Highway Z, in the Town of West Bend on Monday night as six fire departments responded to a call for a possible structure fire.
The call came in around 8 p.m. Batallion Chief Rob Schafer said there was a smell of smoke on the third floor. “When I arrived there was nothing visible outside the building,” said Schafer. “Some residents were being evacuated. An investigation narrowed the cause of the alarm to a piece of HVAC equipment in the mechanical room.”
After 30 minutes the situation was cleared.
There were 200 people in the building and 50 percent were briefly evacuated.
“We’re very fortunate and want to thank the West Bend First Responders for all they’ve done,” said Nicole Pretre with Cedar Community. “Everyone did exactly what they were supposed to do; everyone stayed calm and followed protocol and we’re in really good shape.”
