Hartford, Wi – Students from Hartford Union High School took a break from their construction project on Skypark Drive this week to pose for pictures and be recognized for their efforts pursuing the trades.
The new build began after Labor Day as students in Mark Murphy’s construction and engineering class are working on their 28th home in partnership with the local Rotary Club.
“They’re learning carpentry, rough framing, installing windows and trusses, working with the electrician, and interior trim,” said Murphy.

Chris Duehring, 17, senior, plans on being a mechanical engineer. “It’s important to learn the little things about what make the house stand and work,” he said.
Almost a third of the class this year is made up of female students. Many feel the trades are a viable career option.
“It’s a path that’s really opened up for us over the years,” said Claire Bingen.
Ella Smithyman said, “It really shows women can do exactly what the men can do.”
Through Rotary funding the home in Hartford, WI will eventually be sold, and proceeds will then be used as seed money to fund the next class project.
