January 26, 2020 – West Bend, WI – It’s not every day a community is invited to a birthday party for a couple of 650-pound bears turn 6 years old. Saturday, however, was the big day for Lewis and Clark and Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary spoiled them.
There were two plastic sleds heaped full of treats including jars of peanut butter, mixed in with carrots, oranges, apples, marshmallows, lettuce and celery (for digestive purposes) and then everything was slathered in maple syrup.
Hang a couple of colorful piñatas that looked like cupcakes and the party was well underway.
In typical child-like fashion… the bears played with their food. Clark had a ball rolling around in the graham crackers and grapes. The syrup helped make everything stick and when he was finished making his mark he lumbered to his feet and shook the matted Cheerios off his thick brown winter coat.
There were two store-bought cakes decorated with blueberries, red licorice, plenty of sugar and each was labeled with a single letter on the top drawn out in pecans. “L” for Lewis and “C” for Clark. Both cakes were demolished within the first five minutes… but the bears didn’t seem to mind.
There were about 70 people on hand for the celebration. Some folks came in from Campbellsport, Sheboygan, Plymouth and West Bend.
Everyone sang Happy Birthday and for Lewis and Clark it seemed like just another day.
A big thanks to David Fechter and Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary for the party.
