April 6, 2017 – West Bend, WI – The University of Wisconsin Colleges’ Writing Program recently won a Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Writing Program Certificate of Excellence.
According to Greg Ahrenhoerster, Professor of English at UW-Waukesha and English Department Chairperson, “This award is a testament to the incredibly hard work of dozens and dozens of instructors whose desire to best serve our students is demonstrated by their tireless effort to improve their courses and their teaching.
The eagerness of the members of the UW Colleges English department to collaborate on creating better curriculum and sharing teaching ideas is impressive–they love to talk about teaching!”
The Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) is a constituent organization within the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
UW-Washington County is one of 3 campuses in the UW Colleges’ southeast region, along with UW-Sheboygan and UW-Waukesha. The UW College campuses are located across Wisconsin and serve more than 13,000 students.
The selection committee noted, “The University of Wisconsin Colleges Writing Program’s ability to use placement and assessment process effectively produced persuasive data.”
Judges noted both as “cybersmart” and evidence of the program’s effectiveness to advance under-prepared students.
For example, the committee discussed the current trend of “using more reading instruction in writing class contexts, noting how Wisconsin (UW Colleges) is proceeding in that direction with its developmental reading program.” The committee also admired the Writing Studio Course and the program’s ability to advance first year college literacy.
The CCCC, with more than 5,000 members and subscribers, “supports and promotes the teaching and study of composition, rhetoric, and communication skills at the college level, both in undergraduate and graduate programs.”
