United Way of Washington County allocates $270,000 to eight local programs

Dec. 2, 2017 – Washington Co., WI – United Way of Washington County is working to ensure that local children and adults are physically and mentally healthy.

Good health allows people to provide for their families, realize their dreams, and become positive members of the community. Addiction, poor health, and chronic illness all lead to lower educational outcomes, economic losses, and shorter lifespans. As a result, United Way of Washington County has chosen to focus local efforts on:

·         Reducing rates of substance abuse through prevention, education, and treatment

·         Increasing awareness and access to mental health services

·         Supporting life-long healthy choices

Any eligible nonprofit agency or coalition is invited to apply for 3-year funding under United Way’s Health Impact Pillar. Programs must serve Washington County residents, advance United Way’s health goals, and align to one or more of the three focus areas.

“Health is the one thing that is important to everyone—it’s the foundation for success in life,” said Kristin Brandner, executive director of United Way of Washington County. “We want to leverage partnerships and resources so that people in our community are empowered to take control of their health and live fuller, more vibrant lives.”

Each year, United Way accepts applications for program funding under one of their three impact pillars: Education, Financial Stability, or Health. These are the building blocks for a better quality of life.

In June, a panel of community volunteers evaluated applications for financial stability programs. The volunteers interviewed agency representatives and arrived at a consensus, allocating $270,000 to eight local programs, including two programs that are new to United Way:

·         Project SEARCH Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin

This transition and career training program provides opportunities for adults with disabilities. The evidence-based workplace immersion program takes place in a host business, combining classroom instruction with hands-on career exploration.

·         Independent Living Services Waukesha-Ozaukee-Washington County Workforce Development

This new initiative will assist young adults aging out of foster care or other residential facilities. The program will help these individuals become self-sufficient by providing training on key independent living topics, including housing, employment, education, transportation, health/well-being, and interpersonal relationships.

United Way is able to support these and 23 other programs thanks to the generous support of local donors. To join the uniting force for good, please give during this year’s campaign. Individuals and organizations can mail a check to P.O. Box 304, West Bend, WI 53095, or give online at www. unitedwayofwashingtoncounty. org.

All applications for United Way program funding must be outcomes-driven and evidence-based. The deadline for education program applications is March 23, 2018.
