January 27, 2021 – Washington County, WI – This past weekend was full of excitement as the Slinger and Hartford snowboard teams competed yet again in two days of boarder cross events at Alpine Valley Ski Resort in Elkhorn, WI.
The first boarder cross event started Saturday, January 23. The course was very challenging, technical, and fast, but a ton of fun. Experienced and advanced riders did well handling the difficult specs this course contained.
For high school standings, Ethan Benedict from West Bend took first for time trials followed closely by Brady Jackson from Slinger in second. Jack Felix from West Bend took fourth and Hunter Wenzel from Hartford secured fifth. Marisa Reyes, a senior from Slinger finished first followed closely behind by Slinger sophomore Delaney Braun in second.
For club placements, Mickey DeLong a freshman from Slinger took third for the Breaker Girls division. Emma Smith, a Slinger Middle School eighth grader took fifth. For Youth Women’s division, Ava Stortz, a sophomore from Slinger finished second and Braun finished third.
Joe Hefter and Luke Schmitt, both freshman at Slinger took first and second for Breaker Boys division, followed closely behind by Jack Bullis, a freshman from Slinger in fifth.
For Youth Men’s division, Jackson, Benedict, and Isaac DeWalt took third, fourth, and fifth. Closely following was Isaac DeWalt, Ethan Smith, and Conor Schmitt all juniors at Slinger High. They took sixth, seventh, and eighth out of 31 competitors.
On Sunday January 24, a few changes were made to the course overnight to ensure safety and ease for the racers. Club races were a bit more competitive as the course was slower due to snow and some of the features had been dulled down to make it a bit simpler and more achievable for the newer racers.
For Youth Women, Braun placed second out of 19 racers. Emily Whealon, a sophomore from Slinger placed fifth and Stortz after a hard fall in semifinals, took seventh. In the Breaker Boys division, L Schmitt held second and Bullis and Hefter weren’t too far behind with fifth and sixth places for Slinger. Jackson, DeWalt, and Smith from Slinger took third, fourth, and fifth places.
There is one more weekend of racing, taking place on February 6 and 7th at Devil’s Head Resort. This will be the last weekend of club slalom and giant slalom races before the high schoolers go to Mt Lacrosse to compete in the State Snowboarding Championships.
The current overall standings for high school competition are pictured below, showing the team and individual placements as of January 24.
This shows the total accumulated points the teams and the racers have acquired over the entire season.
The racers have a weekend off, but are excited to train and get ready for the last race and the exciting State race coming up soon!
