Jan. 2, 2017 – West Bend, WI – I’ve been making calls to Froedert St. Joes since Sunday and still no Baby New Year for Washington County … unless the parents are from this area and went elsewhere.
I asked the charge nurse at St. Joes if there were any babies on tap and she said, “It’s not like I have a crystal ball Judy.”
Hartford Hospital doesn’t birth babies anymore.
Remember when St. Joseph’s Hospital was in West Bend on Silverbrook Drive and Oak Street. I think a number of readers would remember that maternity ward.
There was a great statue of St. Joseph above the entryway door and then a gorgeous stained glass window and nuns were nurses and they were scurrying all about.

I was the New Year’s baby in West Bend in 1962. I was born in St. Joseph’s hospital. I had my picture in the West Bend News and I received many gifts for local businesses.
Four of my five children were born at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital in West Bend. I work at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton now, and I can tell you, without a doubt, that I wish all deliveries/births could be like the ones I had at St. Joes’s — glad I was having my children back when a hospital was still focused on the people in the community.
All 3 of my children were born at St. Joseph’s Hospital–1968-1975. They were all delivered by Dr. James Albrecht of Jackson. A good doctor, and a good hospital.
St. Jo’s opening day was July 6, 1930. My sister was born that day and was the 1st baby born there. Was open house day for the public.
Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin St. Joseph’s Hospital does indeed deliver babies – more than 700 a year, to be exact! That averages out to about two babies a day but, of course, babies don’t always have a schedule. Some days we have the honor of welcoming many babies into the world, and other days zero – even holidays, 365 days a year. This year, we welcomed little Avalynn Muriel of West Bend on Jan. 2, at 4:19 p.m. Congratulations to parents Ashley and Matt!
We’ve been proudly serving the Washington County & surrounding communities with birthing services for 86 years – it is an honor we don’t take for granted. We’d love to give you a tour – reporters and those planning their families.
