No. 2 Slinger advances to WIAA football playoffs vs. No. 7 Germantown | By Delaney Braun

October 16, 2022 – Slinger, Wi – In the last regular season football game, the third place Slinger Owls defeated the second place West Bend East Suns 42-13.

The Suns and Owls were evenly matched in the first quarter, with no score. Weather was rainy and frigid, but it didn’t stop the Owls.

In the second quarter Slinger’s offense was able to work its way up the field allowing senior running back Avery Kurth to score on a 12-yard run for a touchdown at 11:47.

Following shortly after, the Suns struck back with a 49-yard run by senior quarterback Peyton Fountain, tying the game 7-7.

Slinger fought hard as senior quarterback Tanner Hora scampered into the end zone on a quick 1-yard run for the touchdown giving the Owls a 14-7 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Owls racked up the points with Kurth powering through again, with back-to-back touchdowns at 10:43 on a 49-yard run and receiving an 11-yard pass.

This put the Owls up 28-7.

The Suns were able to achieve one more touchdown off a fumble recovery for a 79-yard run, but the missed extra point putting them at 28-13.

At the end of the game, Kurth had yet another 7-yard running touchdown at 3:43 pushing the Owls to a 35-13 lead. Junior Jack Klippel finished the game with a 47-yard rushing touchdown finalizing the Owls win with a score of 42-13.

Hora went 12/16 with 114 passing yards and 45 rushing yards and Kurth had an astounding 230 rushing yards and 36 receiving yards. Junior Mark Leidel also had 8 receptions for 78 yards. Owl seniors Chase Elliott, Luke German, and Jacky McClintock were key on defensive plays stopping key targets Nate King and Colton Kress. Slinger had 481 offensive yards compared to East’s 234 yards.

This win secured the Owls a second-place finish in the Northshore Conference.

With a record of 7 – 2 the Owls picked up a No. 2 seed in WIAA Division 2 and will host No. 7 seed Germantown at home on Friday, October 21 with kickoff at 7 p.m. The winner will go on to play either No. 3 Milwaukee King or No. 6 Kaukauna on Friday, Oct. 28.

Elsewhere in D2, Hartford received a No. 1 seed and will host No. 8 Nicolet on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. The winner will play No. 4 Milwaukee Vincent/Destiny or No. 5 Homestead on Friday, Oct. 28.

In WIAA Division 3, No. 3 seed West Bend East will host No. 6 McFarland on Friday, Oct. 21.

In WIAA D4, Kewaskum is a No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 Kohler/Sheboygan Christian/Sheboygan Lutheran on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
