Stay safe while spending time outdoors | By Don Patnode – American Family Insurance

Washington County, WI – Each year about 200,000 children are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for playground-related injuries. What is even more staggering—about 15 children die each year as a result of playground-related incidents. It is important to stay safe while playing outside, especially in public play areas. The following information from the team at American Family Insurance, 850 E. Paradise Dr., West Bend, WI, will help keep you and your loved ones safe while playing on play structures at home or at your local playground.

Playground Safety
When choosing a playground to visit, there are several things you can look for to help protect the safety of your loved ones. Use the following checklist as a guide to help
determine if a play structure is safe for use.
» Most playground injuries are caused from falls, so having adequate protective surfacing surrounding play equipment is very important. Avoid playgrounds surrounded
by concrete and asphalt; choose a playground that uses shredded recycled rubber, sand, pea gravel, mulch or wood chips. It is important that the surfacing material is thick enough to cover the play area and adequate depth to protect a child if he or she falls.
» Be aware of rotting or splitting wood, roots, rocks or other environmental obstacles. These items are dangerous and may cause tripping, impalement or other injuries if
someone falls on or near them.
» Standing water can cause slipping and also lead to rotting or deterioration of playground equipment. Make sure the play area has proper water drainage.
» Equipment should be free of excessive wear. Peeling or chipping paint, bending or warping, hardware deterioration and protrusions and missing parts can be harmful and provide an unsafe play environment.
» Watch for exposed mechanisms, hardware and footings. These items present tripping hazards and can mean major injuries if fallen on or near.
» Vandalism, trash or broken glass.

Look Before You Jump: Trampoline Safety
The rate of injuries that come from jumping on a trampoline continues to climb each year. Following these guidelines can help cut down on trampoline-related injuries.
» Place your trampoline on a safe surface. Make sure to pick a level surface that is covered with sand or shredded bark and away from trees, structures and fences. If possible, dig
a pit so that the trampoline is near ground level.
» Install padding to completely cover the springs, hooks and
metal frames

Stay Safe While Spending Time Outdoors
» Install a manufactured safety net that is designed to reduce the chance of falling.
» Restrict trampoline usage to children six years old and over.
» Only allow one person at a time to use the trampoline.
» Play safe and do not bounce from the trampoline to the ground or try somersaults or other dangerous moves.
» Never let children use the trampoline without direct adult supervision.
