August 29, 2022 – Village of Newburg, WI – I love summer and all it brings to the Village. Take time during this warm weather to enjoy the Milwaukee River, go to community picnics, or enjoy the bands in our surrounding communities. There is much to see and do and, in today’s busy world, our locale is the best place to rest, recharge, and invest time in our friends and families.
Your Board of Trustees has been busy working on the annexation of properties adjacent to Main Street West, approving playground equipment and installation in Presidents Park, creating a Request for Proposals with hopes to change to a new garbage pick-up vendor,
(especially due to the poor performance of our current vendor) and attending to the many other parts of running the village.
We are in the process of renewing our sanitary license from the State of Wisconsin and are being asked by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to increase the amount of mediation to the water before putting it back in the river.
Our tests show our plant does a pretty great job at processing sewer waste in a clean and responsible way, but the DNR has set a higher bar to meet. We have concerns that this puts an undue burden on the village but believe we may have no choice but to comply with the DNR’s directives.
For this reason, we are working with engineers and wastewater treatment experts to make plant upgrade plans and provided a notice in your recent sewer bill about the possible rate increases the board is considering.

The village continues to look for funding for the Main Street project. We are doing what we can to bring additional funding to the table to lessen the effect on taxpayers.
We had a huge turnout of residents at our public information session in April and we really appreciate your time and dedication to helping us make the right decisions on this major project. As you’ll recall, Main Street has utility poles located in the roadway, collapsing sewers beneath it, and is in need of major reconstruction, but this type of work has a price tag that is outside the Village’s reach in the current economy.
Based on the survey responses received from the public session, over 75% of attendees supported both putting the utilities for Main Street. underground and replacing the roadway.
At this point, we hope to know by mid-September whether Newburg will be selected for a grant toward replacing, repairing, and revitalizing Main Street. We will continue to keep everyone informed once we hear back from our applications for grants and will hold another public listening session to partner with residents and business owners.
A big thank you to the Newburg Fire Department on their running of the Newburg Fireman’s Picnic and Parade. Thank goodness the rain stopped before the parade started. It was good to see everybody lining the streets to watch the parade.
Our Department of Public Works (DPW) has been busy this last quarter cleaning up parks, repainting lines on our streets, brush chipping, and installing our new playground equipment.
Thank you to DPW for keeping the village in great shape and for your hard work, even when it’s in the hot sun.
You received a letter regarding the reevaluation of the assessed value of all properties in the Village of Newburg. That “walk around” reassessment began in July and is expected to conclude in the coming month or so. The assessor is walking around properties (not
requesting entry) in order to help update village records about property values. Doing this will help ensure that your 2023 assessment is accurate given the crazy economy and the interesting real estate market we’ve witnessed in the last few years.
Once the walk-around evaluations are complete, they will be used to create your January 1, 2023, assessed values, which you will be notified of in writing in the spring of 2023. Should you find any concerns with the assessments, you will have an opportunity to voice your reasoning and appeal if necessary. We hope that by reevaluating all properties in the village at once, a fair market update can be achieved. Remember the Highway 33 and County I interchange, in Ozaukee County, will be closed starting for the installation of a roundabout. It is scheduled to last 4-6 months. Make sure you have alternate routes going east on Highway 33.
