Rep. Bodden on the Assembly’s passage of Sturgeon Resolution

Madison, WI – State Representative Ty Bodden (R-Stockbridge) issued the following statement regarding Assembly Joint Resolution 106, recognizing the importance of sturgeon to Wisconsin and designating the second Saturday of February in 2024 as State Sturgeon Spearing Day.

“Wisconsin is known for its healthy and robust sturgeon population thanks to conservation efforts by our fishing clubs, Sturgeons for Tomorrow, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Due to our state collaborations, states from around the country come to Wisconsin to learn about our conservation efforts. The sturgeon spearing season contributes significantly to our state’s economy every February. The lake sturgeon is the centerpiece of the Lake Winnebago Region in Wisconsin.”

This resolution designates the second Saturday of February in 2024 as State Sturgeon Spearing Day in Wisconsin. Additionally, it states that the Wisconsin State Legislature does not support listing the lake sturgeon as endangered in Wisconsin or the Lake Winnebago region, and it urges the Wisconsin DNR to continue to work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service to keep Lake Sturgeon off of the Endangered Species List.

“This resolution signifies the importance of sturgeon spearing within Wisconsin.”
