Dec. 16, 2018 – West Bend, WI – Big NFL rivalry game on tap today as the Packers travel to Chicago to face the Bears.
In West Bend the Grover family is planning a party to watch the game, but according to Judy Grover it’s not going to be what her friends and family expect.
I have a nephew who is head football coach at Carroll College, we also have some new found family thru ancestry. We met up with these two new siblings in the last six months; a sister in Florida, and a brother in Illinois. Both have been looking for us for a number of years. They have been searching for a sister or a brother, little did they know they would find 10 siblings to love and catch up on so many lost years. It has been a emotional ride the last few months.
When Carroll College had its homecoming game, those of us that were able to connect for that cold, cold windy, rainy, mix-of-snow day for a tailgate.
It was a real outside tailgate, we grilled out and the whole works, we went back to a sister’s house for hot soup and hot chocolate, and I asked if I could do Indian fry bread at her house, I was told “no.”
Over many times in our younger years we would all go tobogganing, then come back to my house for chili, hot choc and fry bread, everyone loves the bread, so since they told me “no” I said, “fine, I will plan something sometime at my house and I will make fry bread”
Then my sister in Florida was planning a trip here sometime in December to spend time with her new-found family, when I heard it would be December 14,15 and 16, I said there is a Packers/Bears noon game on the 16, early enough for those traveling to make their plans to return home early, so thinking these families are very involved in sports, lets do a tailgate party, but not at Lambeau, lets do one here (my house) do it in the garage, door open of course, it will be cold like we are at Lambeau, but difference is we can go inside to warm up, get food the whole time without waiting in line and facilities are right handy, so one thing lead to another, I made some plans, sent out an email regarding what my plans are, (such as)we will set up a big screen TV in the garage, I will have a firepit in the yard, and also a gas firepit, we will have a chili dump (everyone brings a quart of chili & put all in one pot) I will get to make my fry bread. Everyone decide what you would like to bring for snacks and I am quite sure it will be a spread for tailgaters.
To my surprise everyone was replying with comments like, “sounds like fun, we will love to have a bonfire and “what is a chili dump?”
The Florida visitors said, “now I need to go find a down coat.”
Yes, they all think I’m “nuts’ but they are all game for it and think it will be fun.
We will be using outdoor lawn chairs, of course blankets, and all need cold-weather clothes.
I am making a sign for Packer/Bears Rivalry Tailgate Party to put out by the garage, with the way the Packers have been playing we might have all become BEARS fans by that time.
Temps at kickoff are expected to be in the low 40s.
