The arrest took place after the sheriff’s office took numerous 911 calls about the operator hitting construction barrels, driving in the emergency lane, crossing multiple lanes and nearly striking several vehicles on northbound I41.
The incident occurred on I41 in the southern portion of Washington County and the truck driver was ultimately stopped on I41 near STH 144.
The operator, a 34-year-old Indiana man, failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for first offense OWI. The deputy administered a preliminary breath test which had a reported value of .358. The semi driver was taken to jail after the incident.
“This is a case of someone who has no regard for the safety of others and needs to be held accountable,” said Sheriff Martin R. Schulteis. “This had the potential to end in incredible tragedy. I am grateful to the multiple citizens who contacted us to report this dangerous behavior. I am also just as appreciative of our staff that keeps a watchful eye to protect our good citizens from individuals like this that make a willful decision to get behind the wheel when they are clearly incapable of responsible decision making.”
