Obituary | Nancy Valind, nee Savard, 90, of West Bend, WI

West Bend, Wi – It is with great sadness that the children of Nancy Jean (Savard) Valind announce the passing of their Mom. She was a GREAT Mom to us all and we will carry her with us in our hearts and try our hardest to emulate her to all of you for the rest of our lives.

Valind

She was born in Escanaba, Michigan to the late Elma (nee Benette) and Albert Savard on March 25, 1934. She grew up in Blaney Park and Escanaba, Michigan with her only sibling, Jack. She attended high school in Escanaba and Misericordia Nursing School in Milwaukee WI. In Escanaba, she was introduced to her future husband Knight Valind by her best friend Audrey (Valind) Shepeck. Mom married Dad on August 27, 1955 in Escanaba.

Her mother and father came from large families. However, Nancy was one of two children but brought the patience and fortitude of the much more experienced and wise Elma into her marriage with Knight . We can honestly say we NEVER heard her swear, or for that matter, lose her temper. Although her children gave her plenty of reasons to do so. She was truly genteel.

She became a mother in 1956. She worked at St. Michael’s Hospital in Milwaukee and at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital in West Bend. In her later years she also taught nurses’ aides in connection with Cedar Lake Home, the Samaritan Home and Moraine Park Technical Institute. She was a faithful member of St Francis Cabrini Church.

Nancy was a lifelong dedicated friend to many people, her Misericordia Nursing School Alumni, Dad’s high school graduating class, the friends they gained while at Berryland Veterans Housing (you know who you are Patty and Judy), and the neighbors from Forest Hills Subdivision east of Jackson. She never was at a loss for invitations to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s school concerts, plays, and graduations. She and Knight also enjoyed their many years at The Rushes in Door County twice a year to watch the seasons change.

Her legacy lives on in her children: Susan Valind, Jeffrey (Kathy) Valind, Kim (Mark) Kruse, David Valind, and Lori (Scott) Verhunce; grandchildren include: Joseph (Jessica) Valind, Anneliese (Emory) Maloney, Sarah (Eric) Mrozinski, Alison Brown, Sheila (Brian) McLaughlin, Matthew (Ashley) Roemer, Michael (Jennifer) Kruse, Nicholas (Heidi) Valind, Brian (Megan) Roemer, Jay (Trisha) Valind, Kaitlyn (Nicholas) Barczak, Gabriel Valind, Abigail Verhunce, Timothy Valind, Madison Verhunce, Olivia Valind, and Emma Valind; great grandchildren: Isabel, Madelyn, Leah, and Aaron Valind; Lydia (Adam) Suscha; Grace, Caleb, Ava, Sophia McDowell; Madeline and Alyssa Mrozinski; Charlotte Brown; Logan, Landon, Lawson Roemer; Rylee and Lila Valind; Eden and Nora Jo Roemer; Grayson Valind; Nellie Barczak, Baby Barczak and Ian Kruse

She was preceded in death by her husband Knight Valind on December 23, 2011, a great-granddaughter Samantha McDowell and her brother Jack (Jeanne) Sevard.

The family will greet relatives and friends during a period of visitation on Friday, April 26, 2024 from 3 until 4:15 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in West Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 4:30 p.m. Entombment will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Washington County Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Cross Roads Care Center in Mayville or The Kathy Hospice are appreciated.

The Schmidt Funeral Home of West Bend is serving the family. Messages for the family may be left in an online guestbook at www.schmidtfuneralhome.com.
