Shirley D. Hofmaier (nee Mayer), age 77, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Cedar Community in West Bend.  She was born on December 5, 1938 at home, in Slinger, near Big Cedar Lake to Edwin and Ruby (nee Endres) Mayer.   She attended Slinger High School and graduated in 1956.  She graduated Mount Sinai School of Nursing in 1960.  She married Francis “Fran” Hofmaier on May 20, 1961 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Nenno.  She started her nursing career at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend for several years while their children were young.  In 1970 she joined the General Clinic of West Bend as the nurse for Dr. William Nielsen.  In 1988 she was appointed to be the Washington County Coroner, a position she held until retirement in 1992.

Shirley was a loving and devoted “Nana” to her grandchildren, enjoying time spent with them and watching all their activities.  Shirley and Fran were both socially active and enjoyed playing cards, Vegas gambling, and traveling.  They were both avid sports fans, especially enjoying watching Brewer games and college football and basketball.  Education was also important to them and they were very interested and supportive in the education of their children and grandchildren.  They also enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Kusel Lake near Wild Rose and had many fond memories of relaxing times spent there with family and friends for over 19 years.

In her later years, Shirley enjoyed being out and about volunteering at the food pantry, local outings with friends and family and quilting.  She truly loved to be active and helpful wherever needed.  She was known for bringing a special bag of “Dilly Bars” to family celebrations – or to comfort a sick grandchild.  She also enjoyed the company of her beloved dog “Sarge”.

Shirley is survived by her children Mary (Michael) Boden of Allenton, James (Therese) of West Bend, Amy (Mark) Connelly of Racine; grandchildren Brett, Kaitlyn (fiancé Lucas Dorn), Nicholas Boden, Anthony (fiancé Clarisa Sanchez), Rachel, and Jenna Stevenson; great-grandchild Paul Stevenson.  She is further survived by her many nieces, nephews, in-laws other relatives and dear friends.  Shirley is preceded in death by her loving husband Francis, her parents, her sister Beverly (Richard) Meeker; brothers-in-law Darrell Hofmaier, Ralph Stoffel, Donald Grady and Glenn Broker.

Visitation will be at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel (1420 W. Paradise Dr., West Bend) on Friday, June 17, 2016 from 4:00 PM until 6:45 PM with a prayer vigil beginning at 7:00 PM.  Visitation will continue at Resurrection Catholic Church (215 Main Street, Allenton, WI 53002) on Saturday, June 18, 2016 from 10:00AM until 10:45AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM.   Following Mass will be Interment of cremains at New St. Peter Catholic Cemetery.
