Oct. 25, 2017 – West Bend, WI – Norma Magdalene Wietor, nee Hawig, of West Bend, entered heaven to join her husband Leo on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the age of 99 years. She was born on July 20, 1918 in the Town of Wayne to the late Jacob and Rose (nee Bingen) Hawig.
Norma loved to sew. During high school while belonging to 4-H, she won 1st place at the Washington County Fair for a suit she sewed for herself and went on to style her suit at the Wisconsin State Fair. Over the years, Norma sewed many clothes. She made a suit for a grandson and a granddaughter’s flower girl dress for a family wedding. Crocheting and knitting came easy for Norma, making afghans, doilies, Christmas tree skirts and many other crocheted Christmas decorations.
She was an excellent cook and some of her family’s favorite dishes were chicken with “spaetzles”, graham cracker nut torte with orange butterscotch topping, and her famous apricot pinwheel cookies made every Christmas. Our mother also loved her flower gardens and vegetable gardens.
In 1946, Norma married the love of her life, Leo. Together, they were blessed with four children. Prior to marriage, she was a telephone operator and also directory assistance at Kilbourn and Hopkins Telephone Company in Milwaukee where she boarded at relatives Rose and Marcella Hawig.
She was an active member of St. Frances Cabrini Parish. She participated in the Christian Women’s Confraternity, the altar society, the apostolate of suffering and communion wash for over 20 years.
