Freshman Calvin Dunn opened the scoring with an early goal for the Timberwolves. Luther Prep countered with a goal by Junior Brandon Bode with five minutes left in the first half. Bode sent a shot to the upper right corner of the net, out of the reach of LWL senior goalie Landen Wild. Midway through the second half, Denny Oechsner scored for the Timberwolves on a shot in the middle area of the field, giving the team a 2-1 lead.
Later that period, senior Ethan Breckenfelder made a run from the LWL end of the field to the Phoenix goalie box and scored a goal from short range. Breckenfelder’s hustle goal let out a big cheer from the home fans with about 6 minutes left.
The Phoenix could not overcome the 3-1 deficit in the final six minutes, thanks to solid defense by JJ Guarnero and others in front of goalie Wild.
The T-wolves win sets up a regional soccer championship with Central Wisconsin Christian, which beat Random Lake/Glenbeulah 8-2 in the other regional semifinal. Earlier this year, the Timberwolves also earned a lopsided win v. Random Lake/Glenbeulah by a 7-1 score. Living Word will host the regional title match this Saturday at 1 p.m. Living Word is the 4th-seed in the Sectional and CWC is the 5th-seed. Waiting for the winner of Saturday’s soccer match is most likely Oostburg, the top seed in the sectional.
