May 9, 2017 – West Bend, WI – Dr. Thomas Joiner, Bright-Burton Professor of Psychology, addressed a group during a Suicide Prevention education forum at the West Bend High School Auditorium on Monday evening. The event was organized by Life of Hope.
Joiner spoke about some of the misnomers and commonalities of suicide.
“Suicide requires the unwiring of that natural fear of death,” said Joiner. “There’s also the thought that people who are suicidal feel like they’re doing everybody else a favor.”
Joiner said finding the commonalities can then be used as “leverage points” to try to intervene and get people help.
