West Bend, Wi – Emerging Leaders with United Way of Washington County gathered this week to learn how to navigate challenges, lead with clarity, and achieve lasting results.
Darcy Luoma, CEO of a successful coaching and consulting firm, has spent the last 20 years helping individuals and organizations build resilience through intentional action and thoughtful decision-making. She used her unique approach to teach leaders in West Bend and Washington County how to strengthen their mental and emotional “core” so they can face obstacles, bounce back from adversity, and thrive under pressure.
Luoma said you have to “train your mind to handle life’s challenges intentionally, you can perform at your best, even under pressure.”
Three key strategies to build resilience:
1. Dealing with Change: Train to Anticipate
Luoma teaches her clients to train their minds to expect change and plan for it. By proactively addressing potential obstacles, you’re less likely to be caught off guard when they arise.
2. Work-Life Balance: Know When to Act
Building resilience means mastering the art of balance. Being strategic about how and when you focus your energy. Identifying the right time to make a move ensures you’re making thoughtful choices that lead to long-term success, not just short-term results.
3. Saying No: The Challenge of Overcommitting
Overcommitting can quickly lead to burnout and stress. Embrace the discomfort of saying no, so you can prioritize what truly matters.
Building resilience is not a one-time event. Luoma compared recalled the Presidential Fitness Award, which included the shuttle run, pull-ups, and the sit-and-reach test. The training wasn’t easy, but it made her stronger. The same is true for your mind.
“When you’re physically fit, everything is easier,” Luoma said. “But it doesn’t get easier. You just get stronger. The same goes for life. When you’re thoughtfully fit, work and life are easier—you’re more intentional and thoughtful about how you handle challenges.”
The key to becoming thoughtfully fit is training your brain to pause, think, and act in moments of stress or uncertainty.
The key is consistency. Training your mind to handle life’s hurdles isn’t always easy, but the more you practice, the more prepared you become to face whatever comes your way.
