Kewaskum Police step in to help prevent elderly man from being scammed | By Chief Tom Bishop

July 6, 2021 – Kewaskum, WI – Kewaskum police are praising the quick action of a clerk at the local Piggly Wiggly for helping save an elderly man from being taken by a scam.
According to police a man attempted to buy a large number of gift cards. The employee at the grocery recognized this as a possible scam and contacted the Kewaskum Police Department.

Officer Rosales met with the man and determined he was contacted by an unknown number. The person stated the man’s PayPal account had been hacked.
The unknown person told the man he needed to pay back the amount the hackers used by purchasing Visa gift cards and providing the gift card numbers over the phone.
Officer Rosales attempted to speak with the unknown subject, however he simply did not wish to talk and hung up.
Officer Rosales advised the man of the scam and directed him to speak with his bank to have an alert placed on his account as a precaution.
“Without the kindness and vigilance of the Piggly Wiggly employee who alerted us, this man would have been frauded out of approximately $6,000,” said Chief Tom Bishop.
