August 20, 2020 – Ozaukee County, WI – On Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at approximately 3:25 pm, the Ozaukee Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting two people in a small orange boat yelling for help in Lake Michigan near the Port Washington Harbor entrance.
The Ozaukee Sheriff’s Rescue Boat was dispatched as well as the City of Port Washington Fire Department for a water rescue. A City of Port Washington Police Officer spotted 2 people on the rock break wall approximately 500 feet south of the South Harbor Navigation Light East of Coal Dock Park.
The two victims had been on Lake Michigan in fishing kayaks and were pushed by the winds and waves into the rock break wall. Winds at the time were 10-15 Knots with waves 1-3 feet.
Rescue swimmers were deployed and reached the pair with their kayaks. Both people were wearing appropriate Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s). Both were rescued and transported via Port Washington Fire Boat to the marina and were evaluated by Port Washington Paramedics and the victims refused transport.
Rescue Boat crews worked to successfully recover and return the stranded kayaks to the owners.
