Governor Tony Evers is seeking applicants to fill the post effective March 3, 2022. The new judge will complete a term ending July 31, 2023.

Martens, 59, was appointed by Gov. Thompson as District Attorney in Washington County in 1999.

Martens ran unopposed 5 times until 2010 when Judge Dave Resheske retired. Martens received the gubernatorial appointment and then ran successfully the next year.

Martens was re-elect to a 6-year term in April 2017.

In 2019 Judge Martens made a push to reinstate a drug treatment court in Washington County.

“A treatment court is an opportunity to take someone who has been charged with one or more crimes and divert them toward treatment,” said Martens. “If they successfully complete treatment they get the charges dismissed at the end of the diversion.”

In 2021, just two short years later, Washington County Drug Treatment Court celebrated its first graduation.
