HUHS Rotary May Students of the Month announced | By Kayla Davis

June 1, 2023 – The Hartford Rotary Club and Hartford Union High School, 805 Cedar Street, Hartford, WI, are pleased to announce that Leah Schultze and Helen Wilson were honored recently as Rotary Students of the Month. The students were given special recognition for their accomplishments at the Hartford Rotary Club’s Thursday noon meetings during the month of May.

Leah Schultze is the daughter of Elizabeth Schultze. Schultze has been a member of the National Honor Society for two school years. As a member of the National Honor Society, she has contributed approximately sixty hours of service to the Hartford community. She has played the alto saxophone in the band for three years. Schultze was in the concert band during her freshman year and was accepted into the symphonic band for her sophomore year. As a member of the band, she also participated in the pep band, where she performed at the home football and basketball games.


Schultze has been on the high honor roll all four years of high school. In May of
2022, she received a certificate of nomination for the Congress of Future Medical
Leaders Award of Excellence. Schultze received a gold medal for her alto saxophone
solo at solo and ensemble in her freshman year, and a silver medal in her sophomore
year. For college next year, Schultze was awarded the Hagan Scholarship, which is a
national need- and merit-based scholarship. She was also selected to receive the
Mercile J. Lee Scholars Program at UW-Madison, which includes a 4-year, full tuition
scholarship and an $800 book stipend per year.

After high school, Schultze plans to attend UW-Madison to major in Nutritional
Sciences and potentially minor in Exercise Science.

Helen Wilson is the daughter of Catherine and Paul Wilson. Wilson is involved in
the HUHS Concert Choir and Symphonic Band. She is one of the current captains of the
color guard and was the captain of the girl’s swim team for 2 years. Wilson competed at
the state competition three out of the four years of her time on the swim team. She has
twice been selected to participate in the WSMA State Honors Choir where she got to
work with nationally renowned conductors and incredibly talented students from
Wisconsin.


Wilson has received the following special honors: Girls Swim Coaches Award,
Varsity Letter and all four chevrons, Band Letter, Choir Letter, Choir Trophy, Academic Certificate, Academic Letter, Academic Medal, Academic Plaque, over ten individual
NEWSPA (newspaper conference) awards, and two first-place blue ribbon NEWSPA
awards for the entire publishing (The Hartford Chronicle).

Wilson has gone on three separate Group Mission Trips with her church. These
involved volunteering a week of her summer to help people in less fortunate areas
throughout the United States. Some of her time has also gone into working as a swim
coach for Lake Country Swim Team and working at St. Vincent de Paul. She has also
volunteered in various school functions like proctoring the middle school math meet or
timing for a boy’s swim meet.

Wilson plans to attend UW-Stout and major in Food Science and Technology.
She will also participate in the band and choir programs that they offer.
