July 26, 2017 – Washington Co., WI – Hi, my name is Matthew Oelhafen I live in Wayne WI, on a beef farm and I’m a member of the Wayne Crusaders 4-H Club.
I am showing steers at the Washington County Fair. Most people don’t know how much work and effort it takes to take an animal to the fair. But I do.
It starts after the fair the year before when we get our fair steers. Then in December the weigh in comes around. They get weighed to check the rate of gain at the fair.
We have been working with our steers since Memorial day weekend. Some of them are very halter broke but others still have not got the gist of halters. My steers (Mike & Ike) are very good. When it comes fair time, everyone is in a rush. You also have to wash your steer to make them look nicer for the show. And you also need show halters and the show stick and buckets for them to eat and drink out of.
On Tuesday we moved in all of the steers to the fair. On Thursday we have the beef show bright and early at 8 a.m and the junior livestock auction begins at 6 p.m. hope to see you there.
In conclusion, there are a lot more things that go into a steer than people think. So next time you walk through the beef barn check out all of the steers, and how nice they look!
