Hartford Rotary 2024 December Students of the Month | By Katrina Cravy

Hartford, WI – The Hartford Rotary Club and Hartford Union High School are pleased to announce that Ella Smithyman and Hannah Szmurlo were honored recently as Rotary Students of the Month. The students were given special recognition for their accomplishments at the Hartford Rotary Club’s Thursday noon meetings during the month of December.

Ella Smithyman is the daughter of Carrie and Chad Smithyman. Smithyman is a member of the National Honor Society, H-Club, SkillsUSA, and the Girls Tennis Team at Hartford. She is a three year varsity letter winner in tennis and was named to the Academic All-State Tennis Team in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Smithyman placed 4th at the SkillsUSA state competition in Architectural drafting in 2024. She was part of the architectural design team for the 2022-2023 and the 2024-2025 VISION Homes. Smithyman is a current member of the 2024-2025 VISION home build team.

Smithyman is involved at St. Olaf Church with the Church Service Outreach and youth group. She has participated in a mission trip to an Indian Reservation in Minnesota and has helped with the annual youth Christmas program a Pie Social at St. Olaf Church.

After graduation from HUHS, Smithyman plans to attend UW-Milwaukee to earn a degree in Architecture in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Hannah Szmurlo is the daughter of Amanda Markeland and John Szmurlo. At Hartford Union High School, Szmurlo is currently involved in Student Council and National Honor Society. She has been a member of the Student Council all four years and currently serves as president.

Through Student Council, Szmurlo has volunteered her time helping with the annual Veterans Day Breakfast, planning the school staff pancake breakfasts, planning homecoming and its various activities, decorating downtown for Christmas with the Volunteers for a Beautiful Hartford, helping with Fiesta Latina for Casa Guadalupe and working at Enchantment in the Park.

Through the National Honor Society, Szmurlo has helped with Hartford Union High School’s annual Senior Scholarship breakfast by preparing and serving the food. Szmurlo also volunteers every week at the local Aurora Hospital as an Advocate Aurora Front Desk Ambassador.

She helps navigate and transport patients to where they need to go in the hospital. Szmurlo has also participated in other volunteer activities like the Washington County’s 4-h dog project helping with training, setting up, and cleaning up.

After graduating from HUHS, Szmurlo plans to attend either the University of Wisconsin- Madison or the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to pursue a major in Biochemistry. She would like to attend medical school with the end goal of securing a job in the healthcare field.
