Hartford Rotary names Students of the Month for May | By Teri Kermendy

June 6, 2019 – Hartford, WI – The Hartford Rotary Club and Hartford Union High School are pleased to announce Joshua Stortz, Leah Weninger, and Rachel Zuern were honored recently as Rotary Students of the Month.

The students were given special recognition for their accomplishments at the Hartford Rotary Club’s Thursday noon meetings during the month of May.

Joshua Stortz is the son of Teresa and Tim Stortz.  Stortz is a member of the National Honor Society and plays number 4 singles on the varsity boys tennis team.  He participated in baseball and basketball as a freshman and sophomore.  Stortz has also been recognized at the high school as dance champion three years in a row. 

In his spare time, Stortz works at Kettle Hills Golf Course, volunteers his time as an assistant coach for the 8th grade Richfield boys basketball team, and serves as an usher at his church.

Stortz plans to attend UW-Oshkosh in the fall.  At the present time, he is undecided on a major but is considering working toward a degree in the medical field.

Leah Weninger is the daughter of Mary and Ken Weninger.  Weninger is a member and Vice-President of the Voces Bel Canto women’s choir, Skills USA, and the FFA at HUHS.  She has served as Parliamentarian, Vice-President, and is currently President of the Hartford FFA Chapter.  Weninger was awarded second place at the district speaking contest in Job Interview and Parliamentary Procedure.  She has been a member of the State FFA Honors Choir and the National FFA Choir.  Weninger competed and won the State FFA Talent competition and was selected to compete at the National FFA Convention.  

Weninger has volunteered her time at the Iron Ridge Fire Department Picnic, her local 4-H Club highway cleanup, the annual Antique Power Club Show, the Neosho Snowmobile Races and Dairy Promotion Farm Events.  With the Hartford FFA Chapter, she has participated in the Toys for Tots program, instructs young kids about agriculture, and helps out at the Washington County Breakfast on the farm.

In the future, Weninger plans to attend Fox Valley Technical College to earn a degree in Ag-Business, communications and Dairy Science.

Rachel Zuern is the daughter of Bobbie Jo and Jim Zuern.  Zuern is a member of the National Honor Society, the H-Club, the SMART Team, and the Girls Cross Country and Track and Field Teams.  She also participated in the Girls Basketball program at HUHS during her freshman-junior years.  Zuern was named the Track and Field Team MVP and was a Division I State Track Meet Qualifier in 2017.  She was also selected as an HUHS Homecoming and Prom Court representative in 2018.  In 2019, Zuern was nominated for a WIAA Scholar Athlete award.

Zuern has given back to her community by volunteering her time as a Special Olympics assistant coach and assisting grade school athletic activities at St. Kilian Parish and School. 

 Zuern will be attending UW-Madison in the fall to study Pharmacy, Nutrition, and Spanish.
