Oct. 5, 2017 – Young America, WI – A quick note to let friends know Harold “Sonny” Mapes has died. Sonny was a local veteran, a real character, and a good friend.
Sonny had some fantastic motorcycling stories, killer pork chop sideburns and he was apparently a real hellion in his younger days.
Sonny collected Civil War memorabilia and he traditionally fired off his cannon to start the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dundee.
Sonny was genuinely a good guy with a unique sense of humor. He often threatened to steal my bicycle seat so I wouldn’t risk my neck on adventuresome solo bicycle tours.
The official obituary for Sonny Mapes will be forthcoming.
Please keep his wife Betty and the rest of the Mapes family in your prayers.
Sonny was my cousin. He was always a very friendly, outgoing, kind person. He was much like his uncle George, always had a joke to tell although I didn’t always get the ‘humor’ in it. He was a unique individual who loved his country. His had an outstanding collection of civil war memorabilia.
Sorry to hear about Sonny. Yes, he was always a fun guy. He lived a good life.Wonderful family
that we have known for many years. RIP Sonny.
