Bernice G. Mayer, nee Miller, formerly of Newburg, died peacefully and went home to her heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at the Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 95 years. She was born on November 18, 1920 in Manitowoc to the late Frank and Frances (nee Zeltinger) Miller. At an early age, her family moved to the Newburg area.
On June 7, 1941, she was united in marriage to Gilbert V. Mayer at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg. Gilbert predeceased September 11, 2001.
Throughout her 95 years of life, Bernice touched many hearts. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, proud grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Bernice was an avid baker. Her homemade breads, kuchens, cinnamon rolls and cookies were a trademark of hers. Her cookie jar was always full. Her strength and kindness, and love for her family were recognized by many. Her contagious smile will be remembered by all who knew her.
She was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg where she was a member of the Christian Women’s Confraternity.
She will be greatly missed by her family. Survivors include 7 children: Jerry (Mary Ellen Dodge) of West Bend, Sharon (Conrad) Fischer of West Bend, Kathy (Richard) Pierce of Montgomery, AL, Judy Austin of West Bend, Danny (Carol) of Newburg, Tom (Connie) of Newburg and Mary (Bill) Chesak of Newburg; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way; 2 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by 1 son Gilbert, Jr. “Gib”, 1 daughter-in-law Annie Mayer and 1 grandson Mark Mayer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 19 at 3 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg with Rev. Kevin Kowalske presiding. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Tuesday from 1 until 2:45 p.m.
