May 20, 2023 – Allenton, WI – On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Fritz Montag, 81, will join 15 other veterans from Washington County, WI on the Stars & Stripes Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
Montag enlisted Nov. 1, 1962, and served in the Marine Corps until November 1966. Basic training was at Camp Pendleton in California and then Montag went to track vehicle repair school at Camp Del Mar in California.
Montag was in Okinawa when he was 21 years old. He spent 13 months there and went on two floats; which means a combat-ready battalion that is shipped out at a moment’s notice anywhere in the world.
“The vehicles we had were impressive,” said Montag. “Just the size and the firepower was significant.”
Montag recalled a tank retriever that had a gasoline engine that had 1,000 horsepower. “It could pull 10 tanks in a straight line,” he said.
