September 3, 2021 – Kewaskum, WI – The Kewaskum Indians host Kettle Moraine Lutheran in their first conference football game this season on Friday, September 3.
The Chargers (1-1) enter the game following a 7-6 loss to Watertown Lutheran Prep, in a game that saw no scoring from either team in the second half. In fact, the Chargers have scored just one touchdown in the second half this season, and they are averaging just 13 points so far; the third worst total points in the East Central Conference.
The Indians (2-0) have been the complete opposite, winning their previous game at home in a 40-30 shootout against Campbellsport. The Indians have been able to get fast starts in both the first and third quarters of games (28 and 24 points respectively) and lead the East Central Conference in total points with 78.
Both teams emphasize the run game as neither team has thrown more than 25 times.
Kewaskum senior Max Melzer leads the offensive charge for the Indians with 256 rushing yards on 35 rushing attempts and 4 touchdowns, all second best in the conference.
The Chargers backfield is led by senior Brandon Kabelowsky who has a 152 rushing yards on 29 rushing attempts and one touchdown.
The Chargers, despite their low scoring, have one the best defenses in the conference, with the second most tackles for lost yards, the most sacks (6.0), the second most fumbles recovered (4) and tied for the second most interceptions (3) including two interceptions by junior Matthew Thistle.
The Indians are no defensive slouches as they have the most tackles for loss in the conference (14) and have 2 team interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns, with one belonging to Melzer who has proven to be a rare both of the ball player and threat.
Kewaskum will host KML Friday, September 3, 2021 with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
