REAL ESTATE | New stores moving into former Shopko? What would you like to see?

March 5, 2022 – West Bend, WI – An announcement is expected to be made in the coming weeks regarding the national chain stores expected to open in the former Shopko in West Bend, WI.

On Monday the West Bend Common Council will adjourn into closed session to consider a loan agreement and a developer’s agreement with Corta Development, the Florida-based firm that purchased the former Shopko building, 1710 S. Main Street.

It was December 12, 2021, when WashingtonCountyInsider.com ran a story about the pending sale of the former Shopko building on 1710 S. Main Street in West Bend, WI.

That sale came to fruition on Friday, December 17, 2021.

Corta Development of Florida was the buyer. Corta Development is a “Commercial Retail development and redevelopment firm serving national tenants and brands.”

Cory Presnick is Principal at Corta Development. “We have a vision for the property,” he said. “We’ve done similar projects in Sheboygan and Fond du Lac so it will be something similar in nature with redevelopment.”

In Fond du Lac, WI Corta Development purchased the former Shopko building and Big Lots, Inc. opened on the east end and Hobby Lobby will be taking up a majority of the property to the west with a Taco John’s being constructed in the out lot.

Presnick said the Shopko property in West Bend, WI was inviting because of the endcaps; Hobby Lobby and Kohl’s and he liked the location of Meijer grocery. “We have a lot of frontage on Main Street,” he said. “We like the opportunity to redevelop the box and the outparcel development.”

There are quite a few national chains that have been courted… Presnick said the location on S. Main Street will be divided into four sections. Who would you like to see come to town?

Our educated guess includes Big Lots, HomeGoods, and five below.  What say you?

HomeGoods has stores in West Allis, Wauwatosa and Delafield. The store touts itself as having “unique home decor from around the world all at amazing prices.”

 five below

HomeGoods and five Below are often seen operating side-by-side or in the same strip malls including locations in Oshkosh, WI and Menomonee Falls, WI.
five Below also has stores in Waukesha, Grafton, and Brookfield. The store carries items priced at $5 and below.

The Shopko store closed in West Bend, April 15, 2019, as the national retailer, based in Green Bay, WI, filed bankruptcy.

Since then, the location, 1710 S. Main Street, in West Bend has been for sale. It had randomly been leased by the seasonal Halloween store, but generally sat empty.

This is a working story, and more information will be posted as details become available.

  1. Definately BigLots, & JoAnn Fabrics since we lost the quilting store. Certainly NOT 5 Below- already have 3 similar dollar stores. Home Goods Is good too- but an Olive Garden would also be nice

  2. I am looking forward to goods from around the world and reasonable prices (home decor etc). Would also like to see a farmers market food choices store that supported our local farmers with fresh organic foods. Funky restaurants with a Greek/Mediterranean food menu. Ok that is my wish list for now. Make it happen I know you can 🙂

  3. Hopefully businesses that can operate at a plus, provide employment to the community, maybe a local entrepreneur. I personally liked Shopko.

  4. We don’t need big lots we have a hobby lobby. 5 below would be cool and so would home goods. Maybe a Best Buy or a target or a pet store other than pet supplies plus or pet co.
