Deputies arrived and set up a perimeter on the residence and attempted contact with the caller. Initial attempts were unsuccessful in making contact. Deputies on scene could see the suspect’s apartment lights turn on and off and observed movement inside his apartment complex.
At this time the Fond du Lac County S.W.A.T team and the crisis negotiator team were called to the scene. Once a perimeter was set up, patrol deputies began to evacuate the noninvolved residents from the apartment complex for their safety.
In total, deputies had to clear four apartment units with residents inside while attempting contact with the original caller and maintaining a perimeter. Wisconsin State Patrol assisted in traffic control on County Highway W for the duration of the call.
Due to the reported injuries, Campbellsport Ambulance and Fire Department were requested to stage near the scene. Campbellsport Ambulance requested Flight for Life be put on standby for a potential gunshot wound and Flight for Life responded to the scene.
Once the apartment complex was cleared, negotiations continued with the initial caller. The caller reported to negotiators that he did shoot himself in the stomach and that he was intoxicated and covered in blood. After extended negotiations, the caller became more cooperative.
The caller ended up putting his gun down and peacefully surrendering to law enforcement. When deputies went to treat the male for his wounds, he explained that he did not actually shoot himself and had no signs of any injuries from a gunshot. The male was heavily intoxicated.
The male was evaluated for possible injuries by Campbellsport Ambulance. The male was ultimately transported to St. Agnes Hospital for further treatment.
Multiple criminal charges related to the incident will be forthcoming when the investigation is complete.
