January 17, 2024 – Town of Polk, WI – Frigid temperatures and icy conditions made for extra challenges as firefighters battled an early morning fire at 3685 Mayfield Road in the Town of Polk.
Battalion Chief Hans Lamm said the call came in around 2:15 a.m. for an attic fire in a single-family home in the Town of Polk.
Three people were inside the home when the fire broke out. Lamm said they all got out safely and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
Lamm said other departments assisting at the scene included Hartford, St. Lawrence, Kewaskum, Newburg, West Bend, Slinger, and Allenton.
“There was another big house fire in Ozaukee County at the same time,” said Lamm. “The cold also affected the situation with icy footing, but a county salter arrived and put down a layer of salt.”
There were no fire hydrants in the area, so tenders had to haul water to the scene.
Mayfield Road was closed for about two hours during the incident.
The fire was contained to the attic and the cause appeared to be electrical in nature, possibly a fixture in the attic. About $100,000 in damage was caused by the fire.
Firefighters cleared the scene around 5 a.m.
