Washington Co Sheriff

On 12/17/2024 at 3:37 p.m. the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a 911 call from a property owner on Church Rd in the Town of Jackson reporting a fire in the shop of his property. The caller reported that the shop was full of equipment and that there had been several small explosions.

The caller stated he was calling from another nearby property and that he suffered some burns in the fire. Jackson Fire and Washington Co. Sheriff’s Office Deputies were subsequently dispatched to the scene.

Jackson Fire quickly upgraded the response to the MABAS Working Still level. The first arriving units on scene found the shop, which was an approximately 30ft x 30ft detached building, to be fully engulfed.

Fire personnel were able to quickly knock down the fire before it spread to any of the adjacent buildings, or the living residence located on the property. Units also responded to the location of the caller, and he was treated by EMS staff and transported to an area hospital with minor burns.

The initial investigation showed that the property owner, a male in his 80’s, was welding in the shop when a small explosion happened causing his clothing to start on fire, which caused minor burns. The subject did not have a phone at the property and had to drive to his nearby residence to call 911.

The Jackson Fire Department was assisted by the Slinger, Germantown, Hartford, Richfield, West Bend, Cedarburg and St. Lawrence Fire Departments, as well as Lifestar Rescue.

The outbuilding and its contents are considered a total loss, however there are no damage estimates at this time.

Jackson assistant fire chief Jim Huyser said the fire call for a fully engulfed 25 x 25 metal pole barn came in around 3:37 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. “When I got there, it was fully engulfed, and it looked like the Fourth of July,” said Huyser who was first on the scene.

“There was one individual that had some burns. He was transported to the hospital in Hartford with non-life-threatening injuries,” said Huyser.

According to the Jackson Fire Department the garage was total loss. There were also several adjoining structures, including a two-story house; those buildings were saved and not damaged.

“There were six departments on scene, we used 5,000 gallons of water, multiple tenders because there were no hydrants and then there were six departments on scene, and three more that backfill their station and covered some other calls,” said Huyser.

The pole barn contained farm equipment and tires. “There was a gentleman working in the shop at the time the fire started; he was an individual that was burned,” said Huyser. “I don’t know the cause or what was going on yet.”

Fire officials said there were propane tanks and an acetylene tank for a welding or cutting.

It took firefighters about one hour to get the fire under control. “We were on scene for just shy of two hours,” said Huyser.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
