Town of Trenton, WI – Three years ago a devastating fire ripped through West Bend Lakes Golf Club in the Town of Trenton. Fifteen fire departments from Washington and Ozaukee Counties responded. This week, members of the Newburg and West Bend Lions Clubs donated an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to the West Bend Lakes Golf Club. This donation comes after the club’s previous AED was lost the fire, leaving them without this crucial life-saving device.
Tom and Lee Merkel from The Lakes Golf Club were on hand to accept the AED.

“Our previous AED was only two months old before the fire,” said Tom. “The Lions Club from Newburg had previously donated two AEDs to us. This new AED is a result of their generosity, along with the collaboration of the West Bend Lions Club.”
The new AED is a vital addition to the golf club’s safety equipment. Simple to use, it provides clear instructions for administering aid in the event of a cardiac emergency.
The AED is equipped with an alarm box to ensure emergency services are alerted promptly if the device is used.
Tom Merkel expressed gratitude to the Newburg and West Bend Lions Club for their support. “West Bend Lakes Golf Club truly appreciates your support,” he said. “We hope to continue supporting you through your annual car shows and in any other way we can.”
The donation of the AED is not just a practical contribution but also a symbol of the strong community ties. The Newburg Lions Club’s generosity not only restored safety at the West Bend Lakes Golf Club but also provided peace of mind to all who frequent the club.
Craig Wermager is treasurer with the Newburg Lions Club. “Our Club teamed up with the and the West Bend Lions Club on the new defibrillator,” said Wermager. “Interesting to note, it was the clubs that bought the golf course an AED. That was the one they lost in the fire.”
Wermager said the price has nearly doubled since the last time they presented the gift, but they realize it’s for a good cause.
