Event schedule at Kettle Moraine State Forest – Northern Unit | By Jackie Scharfenberg

June 4, 2019 – Most of the events are free except some locations require a Wisconsin State Park System vehicle admission sticker. The events are held within the Kettle Moraine State Forest – Northern Unit at the specific locations listed for each event.

The Ice Age Visitor Center is located about 20 miles north of West Bend and 20 miles south of Fond du Lac.

Kettle Moraine State Forest

Ice Age Trekkers

June 19, 7:00-8:30 am (Wednesday)

Meet at Ice Age Trail intersection with Division Road south of the Shelter 3 parking lot (located south of County Road F near Dundee)

Join us for a brisk 3.43-mile morning hike between County Road V and Division Road. A shuttle will be available between the starting and finishing spot.

 

Trail Run Zillmer

June 19, 6:00-7 pm (Wednesday)

Zillmer Trail Area (located off County Road SS between County Road G and Hwy 67 near New Prospect)

Join an experienced trail-runner for a run on the 2-mile Green Loop. Proper warm-up and cool-down exercises demonstrated. For anyone over 10 years old. For anyone over 10 years old.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When I Grow Up Nature Story time

June 21, 9:30-10:30 am (Friday)

Ice Age Visitor Center (located off Hwy 67 half mile west of Dundee)

We know what babies look like when they grow up. But what do goslings, fawns, and polliwogs become when they grow up? Join us as we uncover the answer to that question and more. This hour of nature fun awaits 3 to 6 year olds with accompanying adults.

 

Extreme Saturday Morning

June 22, 10:00-11:00 am (Saturday)

Picnic Shelters at Mauthe Lake Recreation Area (located off County Road GGG south of County Road SS near New Prospect) and Long Lake Recreation Area (located off Division Road north of County Road F near Dundee)

Calling all youth to come explore the extremes of nature by participating in the Wisconsin Explorers program! The program involves completing a required number of activities in one of three age appropriate books (ages 3-5; ages 6-8; and ages 9+) to earn a very cool patch. Get help from a naturalist who will work with youth on activities from one of the first four topic areas of the books.

 

Alien Attack Drop In at the Beach

June 22, 1:00-4:00 pm (Saturday)

June 23, 12:00-3:00 pm (Sunday)

Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Beach (located off County Road GGG south of County Road SS near New Prospect)

We’re being invaded not by outer space aliens, but by alien plants and animals. Uncover what foreign species are taking over our native communities and what can be done to help control their spread. You will have a chance to make several unique crafts including a smashed-plant bandanna. Bring your own bandanna or purchase one that day for a small fee. Everyone is invited to drop in for a few minutes or more than an hour for some nature fun. Adults are encouraged to participate with their children.

Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Boat Launch (located off County Road GGG south of County Road SS near New Prospect)

Presenter: Jackie Scharfenberg, Forest Naturalist

Join us for an evening canoe trip around Mauthe Lake and up the Milwaukee River. As we paddle, we will keep our eyes and ears open for evening birds and other wildlife. Basic canoe skills will be covered. No experience is necessary. In the event of threatening weather, the program will be canceled. This program is most appropriate for people over 8 years old. Canoe Adventure

An Evening Exploration

June 27, 6:30-8:30 pm (Thursday)

Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Boat Launch (located off County Road GGG south of County Road SS near New Prospect)

Venture with us by canoe around Mauthe Lake and along the Milwaukee River. Get a close look at the natural communities within and surrounding the lake and river including some of the wildlife. Basic canoe skills will be covered. No experience is necessary. In the event of threatening weather, the program will be canceled. This adventure is for people over the age of 12 years. Uncover some truly astonishing facts about these legless reptiles and the habitats where they live to gain an appreciation of their role in nature. Everyone is invited to drop in for a few minutes or more than an hour for some nature fun. Adults are encouraged to participate with their children.

 

S’more Contest and Smokey Bear’s 75th Birthday Bash

Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Picnic Shelter (located off County Road GGG south of County Road SS near New Prospect)

Let your imagination run wild and create your most unique and delicious s’more to honor Smokey Bear’s 75th Birthday. A panel of judges will award prizes to the best s’mores of the evening during the family concert intermission. Official contest rules available by June 1 at a Forest office or on the Friends of the Kettle Moraine website. A campfire will be blazing for folks to make their own tasty treats. In the case of inclement weather, the contest will move to the Ice Age Visitor Center (located off Hwy 67 half mile west of Dundee).

Take a step back in musical time to enjoy the unforgettable songs of John Denver performed by Brett Hall. This is an outside concert, so remember to bring your blankets and lawn chairs. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Ice Age Visitor Center (located off Hwy 67 half mile west of Dundee). This program is great for all ages from preschoolers through grandparents.
