Washington County, WI – Ed Pruim was born and raised in Chicago, along with his two sisters. Calling himself “a baseball wannabe!” he dreamed of playing professional baseball—someday.
During his sophomore year in high school, his father’s job transferred the family to Milwaukee. In 1953, he graduated from Rufus King High School and went on to attend
Wisconsin State Teachers College, which later became the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
His dreams began to become reality when he worked out with the Milwaukee Braves and played semi-pro baseball throughout Wisconsin. Eventually, he signed a contract with the Kansas City A’s and was assigned to their farm team in Seminole, Oklahoma.

Shortly after, the Korean War began, and Ed was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1955. He was assigned to go to Korea, but at the last minute was sent to Detroit to work in criminal investigation instead.
