West Bend, WI – Rodrigo Cardenas Delgado, 17, from Holy Angels / St. Frances Cabrini Scout Troop 796 worked side-by-side with fellow scouts and troop leaders over the long Labor Day weekend to finish his Eagle Scout project at Sandy Knoll Park in the Town of West Bend, WI.
“This Eagle Scout project was a pretty big deal,” said Cardenas Delgado. “There was a lot of planning and I liked it because people will actually use the boardwalk between holes 8 and 9 while playing the disc golf course at the park.”

Cardenas Delgado started in scouts about six years ago when he was in grade school. “I liked being with friends and going camping,” he said.
The Eagle Scout project afforded him the opportunity to grow his leadership skills and participate in teamwork. “I took it upon myself to lead by example, assign different parts of the project, and keep people motivated because the work was pretty hard,” he said.
Temperatures were in the high 90s for much of the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the scouts gathered to work on the project. Saturday is when they started seeing it really come together.
Scout master Brian Hubbard work alongside the troop. “It is quite the accomplishment for them and it’s really about the scouts demonstrating leadership,” he said.
“To be able to find a benefactor, identify a project, access materials and permits needed, what kind of tools and safety precautions have to be pulled together, how many people do you need to pull this together and work through all those stages to lead this really execute the project.”
Behind the scenes, Cardenas Delgado, had to learn money management and resource what was needed for the project. He said the county will be paying him back for the materials; about $3,500.
The old boardwalk, according to Cardenas Delgado, was in pretty shoddy shape. “It was kind of crooked in some areas, some boards were starting to fall apart. It wasn’t really like the safest boardwalk, so that’s also another reason why I wanted to rebuild it.
“When we were done, we drove the golf cart over it, and it was just so sturdy. It wasn’t wobbly at all. It looks nice and I’m very happy with the end product.”
Cardenas Delgado is finishing up paperwork and will have to go before the board of review at the end of September before his Eagle ceremony in November.
Currently a senior at West Bend West High School, Cardenas Delgado plans to pursue a career in political science.
“I hope this project will make me a better leader and just a better person overall,” he said.
