September 10, 2023 – West Bend, WI – Well the cows got out. It’s never something you really want to hear out of the open kitchen window on a Saturday afternoon… or ever!
I was just standing near the kitchen window, when I saw rather large black shadow out of the corner of my eye, then I heard my husband scream.
It was those terrifying words, “Cows got out.”

I opened the door and saw 5 of our black beauties running down the driveway and onto the country road, my husband driving not far behind on the ranger UTV.
“Run down to the other farm,” is what I thought he said.
So, I ran… looking for more cattle that may have headed west on our road. I rattled the neighbor’s door and asked her to keep a lookout for any stragglers in her yard.
Then I ran back to the farm, winded and out of shape.
I found my husband had the 5 steers back on our farm and contained near the pig farrowing house. The other 3 steers were hiding out behind the horse barn.
What my husband had actually said to me, before my strenuous aerobic activity, was stay on the road and make sure these cows don’t go west, but apparently my brain thought I should run too. Ugh!
It was all too exciting, and the afterthought was I wished I had my phone to take a video.
Missed opportunity! So, here I am wrangling up some steers, like a real cowgirl on foot, wishing I had my horse Bella all saddled up, but still… I was channeling my best Temple Grandin to expertly move my 3 steers to the rest of the herd so we can get them back in their pen and join the other 30 good steers who stayed put.
I was calm, cool and collected, getting them back and forth from the pig barn because I just had an inkling they really weren’t convinced, they wanted their mini vacation to end.
My husband and I finally got those beauties back in their appropriate pen. The whole event got my heart rate going and it was thrilling to get them back home, without seeing a car or a concerned citizen walking their dog, or anyone notifying Allenton Nosey Neighbors on Facebook about the odd traffic on St. Anthony Road.
It’s really never a dull moment on the farm. I’m thankful for our quick wit and communication.
