July 18, 2022 – Washington County, WI – On July 14, 2022, Janet and I headed out for a date night – a debate between the candidates running to represent the 59th Assembly District. One of these two gentlemen will be the next voice in Madison for Hartford, Kewaskum, Campbellsport, north through the Holy Land of Fond du Lac County and into Chilton.
The event was sponsored by a non-partisan organization, the Common Sense Citizens of Washington County. It took place at the beautiful Foundry 45 in Kewaskum.
Although I sat on this stage just a few short years ago, there were minimal policy issues that separated the four candidates at that time. Today, though, there were a couple of striking differences between Ty Bodden and Vinny Egle. One of the debate queries related to an issue that has always been a top priority for our family – the issue of life.
The question regarded the sanctity of life and the pre-born in our now post-Roe state. This should not be a difficult topic for a candidate who will be the voice of the people in the reddest, most Christian-conservative district in Wisconsin.
To be pro-life means that we should not be promoting bills with exceptions to snuff out life. Without hesitation, Mr. Egle stated that he was fine with exceptions for murder in cases of “life of the mother, rape and incest”… but only within the first six weeks. Why six weeks? What makes that any different than 14 or 26 weeks?
Ty Bodden’s answer? “No exceptions.”
So why shouldn’t we allow exceptions?
Believe it or not, the pro-abortion movement created the “Life of the Mother” argument. Why? Because it is easier to sell. It tugs at people’s emotions. The reality? It is a false claim.
No doctor, in an emergency, will ever say, “I am going to only choose to save the mother” or “I choose to save the baby.” A medical professional will do everything within their ability to save both.
The second claim that abortion is OK for rape or incest is not OK. While it is a disgusting and immoral tragedy when these crimes occur, we should not encourage or support another heinous act on top of the first one.
Ty Bodden stated quite clearly in his answer that we should be doing everything possible to make adoption less costly and burdensome. This would aid women in difficult situations.
The final debate question has also been a sticking point for many conservatives around the 59th, including myself. The candidates were asked if they would vote to reinstate Speaker Robin Vos as leader of the Assembly.
Ty answered no, it is time for a change of leadership to move forward while Vinny was unsure and wouldn’t really know until he got to Madison.
In closing, Ty Bodden is the only candidate endorsed by Wisconsin pro-life organizations. A vote for Ty Bodden on August 9 is a vote for life and a vote for change in Madison. Ty will represent us well and continue to move Wisconsin forward.
