C/SrA. Brooke Hurda, 16, is a junior at Slinger High School. “I would strongly recommend joining Civil Air Patrol especially if you have a strong interest in aviation or STEM-related fields,” she said.

Hurda, who was recognized as Cadet of the Year, said Civil Air Patrol helps build leadership and character.

Cadet Timothy DeTroye, 14, was recognized with the Best Attendance of the Year and the Most Promotions of the Year.

“At first I actually didn’t like it but then I found something that I really liked and I started driving for it and just found my groove,” he said. “No matter what challenges you face you you will give your best effort.”

Leader Kerri DeTroye said if people are looking for an alternative from scouts or sports, Civil Air Patrol provides an opportunity with STEM activities and aerospace education. “The program really helps prepare kids for life,” she said. “There are a lot of great opportunities available.”
Jennifer Mann’s son August is in 2nd Lieutenant with the Civil Air Patrol youth program. She said he was able to find something he enjoyed that really help set him on a good path.

“There was a spark ignited in him and a glimmer of responsibility that we had not seen before,” said Mann. “Joining Civil Air Patrol provided August with the structure he desperately needed.
“The organization’s emphasis on discipline and accountability began to
ground him, suddenly tasks like attending meetings regularly in participating in mandatory training no longer felt like chores they emerged as commitments he took seriously. He learned to manage his time effectively balancing schoolwork with Civil Air Patrol obligations.
“This structure had become a game changer for him, instilling a sense of routine and
guiding principles that had previously eluded him.”

The West Bend Composite Squadron Wi-046 interacts with 35 other state squadrons and over 1000 members in events like EAA, and Airventure. There are programs that specialize in drone search-and-rescue training, flight training and over 100 special professional/college level courses.
