Captain Tim Dehring named new West Bend Police Chief

December 15, 2021 – West Bend, WI – The City of West Bend’s new police chief is Captain Tim Dehring.

An internal search was conducted and there were two finalists for West Bend Police Chief: Captain Tim Dehring and Lt. Matt Rohlinger.

Coming out of a closed the Police and Fire Commission announced Dehring as the new chief.

Dehring began his 26-year career at the WBPD on April 9, 1995.

Dehring was promoted to detective in April 2004, to lieutenant in May 2007, he transferred from patrol to criminal investigations in February 2011 and was promoted to captain in January 2013.

Former mayor Kraig Sadownikow said, “We’ve been fortunate to have two qualified people for the position and some people would say we could have explored some outside opportunities, but I had the pleasure of getting know Tim well during my time as Mayor and while out in the community, he is a recognizable face and clearly a strong leader and he will do well.”

Former Washington County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Gonring said Dehring has earned it. “I think he’ll make a great chief,” he said. “I always thought he was heir apparent; he has the rank and the experience.”

Gonring thought Dehring’s biggest challenge will be to recruit and retain officers.

Kenny Asselin with the West Bend Fire Department said, “Captain Tim Dehring is a high-quality candidate to become the next Police Chief of the West Bend Police Department,” said Asselin.  “Tim’s 27-year career has shown a high level of commitment to the service of the citizens of the City of West Bend, as well as great levels of integrity and attention to detail in every position he has served within the organization.”

Dehring is currently a Police Captain and his salary according to human resources is $104,676.75.

Dehring has a Master of Science degree from Cardinal Stritch University in business management and a Bachelor of Science degree in political science and government from UW-Stevens Point.  The Police and Fire Commission required the two finalists to turn in an essay; both were submitted December 9, 2021. Rohlinger said the essay topic was about management style and experience.

Dehring will take over as chief on January 8, 2022.
